Sensual 9 Wood
About
Genre: 1980s Instrumental / “Adult Contemporary”
Active: 1982-1988
Location: Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley)
Bio:
Sensual 9 Wood was the most successful band you’ve never heard of—at least not with the sound on.
Active throughout the 1980s, Sensual 9 Wood specialized in instrumental music for… let’s call it “late-night cable programming.” Their smooth, synth-heavy compositions provided the soundtrack for an entire industry that thrived in the pre-internet era.
The band’s name—reportedly chosen after an all-night brainstorming session that involved significant amounts of cocaine and champagne—became synonymous with a very specific aesthetic. Slap bass, saxophone solos, electric piano, and drum machines combined to create the sonic wallpaper for adult entertainment throughout the decade.
Despite (or perhaps because of) their chosen genre, Sensual 9 Wood were consummate professionals and remarkably skilled musicians. Their compositions were lush, their production was top-notch, and their ability to create “mood music” was unparalleled.
The band dissolved in 1988 when their primary client base transitioned to different production styles. For years, their master tapes sat in a San Fernando Valley storage unit, until Peanut Butter Palace Records acquired them in 2024 and realized the music actually holds up remarkably well on its own.
